準1級の要約問題の原文では、筆者が「これは欠かせない」と強調したい部分に very important や really necessary、さらに「それがなければ〜できない」という補足の文が添えられていることがよくあります。要約ではこの強調と補足をまとめて crucial に置き換えると、語数を減らしながら「結果を左右するほど重要だ」というニュアンスまで残せます。

原文（一部）：When a large earthquake happens, accurate information is very important. Without it, people may not know where to go, and rescue teams may not reach those who need help.

Before は原文の very important をそのまま使い、そのあとの「なければ困る」という説明もほぼ写しています。After は crucial for doing の形で「何にとって不可欠か」を示し、2つの具体例を guiding residents and rescue teams にまとめました。語数は約25語から約13語に減り、very important という2級レベルの表現を準1級らしい語に置き換えたことで、語彙の観点でも評価されやすくなります。

例2：子どもの読書習慣

原文（一部）：Researchers believe that the years before age ten are a very important time for developing reading habits. Children who start reading early often continue to enjoy books later in life.

Before：The years before age ten are a very important time for reading habits.

After：Early childhood is a crucial period for developing a lifelong reading habit.

crucial は a crucial period（決定的な時期）、a crucial step（欠かせない一歩）、a crucial factor（重要な要因）のように、時期・段階・要因を表す名詞と特によく結びつきます。原文の2文目の内容も lifelong の1語に圧縮しているため、情報を落とさずに短くできています。

2. 英作文（意見論述）での使い方：主張を強める位置に置く

意見論述では、crucial を文章のどこにでも散らすのではなく、自分の主張の核になる文に1回だけ使うと効果的です。序論で立場を示すときは、形式主語の型が使いやすいでしょう。

型：It is crucial for A to do. ／ It is crucial that A (should) do.

例文：It is crucial for the government to invest more in renewable energy.

理由の段落では、ある要素が結果を左右することを示す型が便利です。

型：A plays a crucial role in B. ／ A is crucial to B.

3. 似た表現との違い：essential・vital・significant

essentialは「ないと成り立たない」という必要性に重心があり、crucial は「ここで結果が決まる」という分かれ目の感覚に重心があります。たとえば The next two years will be crucial for the company. は「この2年が会社の命運を分ける」という意味で、essential に置き換えると不自然です。

significantは重要さよりも影響や変化の大きさを言う語なので、a significant increase のように数量の変化と結びつきます。crucial increase とはふつう言いません。1級ではさらに硬いimperativeやparamountも使われますが、準1級の論述では crucial と vital を使い分けられれば十分です。

4. 日本人が間違えやすい点

(1) 人を主語にして「〜することが重要だ」と言う

Students are crucial to learn about money. → It is crucial for students to learn about money.

日本語の「学生はお金について学ぶことが重要だ」をそのまま英語にすると、「学生という存在が重要だ」という意味になってしまいます。重要なのは行為なので、It is crucial for A to do の形式主語の文にします。

(2) for のあとに主語と動詞を並べる

It is crucial for children get enough sleep. → It is crucial for children to get enough sleep.

for children のあとは to 不定詞が必要です。that 節を使うなら It is crucial that children get enough sleep. となり、that 節の中は主語と動詞をそろえて書きます。2つの型を混ぜないようにしてください。

(3) 前置詞の選び方

Teachers play a crucial role for the education of children. → Teachers play a crucial role in the education of children.

play a role のあとは in が基本です。日本語の「〜にとって」につられて for を選びがちなので注意が必要です。crucial 単独なら crucial for と crucial to のどちらも使えます。

(4) 日常的な小さなことに使う

It is crucial to bring an umbrella today. → It is a good idea to bring an umbrella today.

crucial は重い語なので、日常の小さな判断に使うと大げさに響きます。論述でも、本当に結果を左右する内容に絞って使うと説得力が増します。
