1. 要約での Before / After：big change や a lot を「変化の大きさ」で言う

準1級の要約問題の原文では、調査の結果や社会の変化が big、a lot、very much のような日常的な語で説明されていることがあります。また、具体的な数字がいくつも並んでいて、それをどうまとめるか迷う場面もよくあります。こうしたとき significant を使うと、細かい数字を省きながら「無視できないほど大きい」という要点だけを残せます。

例1：自転車通勤の増加

原文（一部）：Five years ago, only a few people in the city went to work by bicycle. Now, after new bike lanes were built, the number has grown a lot. Many more people choose to cycle instead of driving.

Before：After the city built new bike lanes, the number of people who go to work by bicycle has grown a lot, and many more people cycle instead of driving.

After：New bike lanes have led to a significant increase in cycling commuters.

Before は原文の grown a lot と many more people をどちらも残しているため、同じ内容をくり返しています。After は a significant increase in A（A の大幅な増加）という名詞句1つで変化の大きさを表しました。語数は約30語から約11語に減り、grow a lot という平易な表現を準1級らしい語の組み合わせに置き換えた点が語彙の評価につながります。

例2：アンケートの結果

原文（一部）：In a survey, the company asked its workers about working from home. Many workers said they felt less stress, and they also said they could spend more time with their families.

Before：Many workers said working from home made a big difference in their lives.

After：Working from home has had a significant impact on employees’ lives.

make a big difference は口頭ではよく使われますが、要約では have a significant impact on の形に替えると引き締まります。significant は impact、effect、role、change のような「影響・変化」を表す名詞と特に相性が良い語です。

2. 英作文（意見論述）での使い方：理由の重みを示す

意見論述では、significant は理由の段落で「この点は軽く見られない」と示すときに力を発揮します。主張の根拠に重みを与えることができるからです。

型：A has a significant effect on B.

例文：Online advertising has a significant effect on what young people decide to buy.

型：A would lead to a significant reduction in B.

例文：Raising the price of plastic bags would lead to a significant reduction in plastic waste.

副詞 significantly も便利です。動詞を修飾して変化の大きさを示せます。

例文：If more people worked from home, traffic in big cities would decrease significantly.

序論では significant を使うより、まず立場をはっきり示すことを優先してください。結論では理由で使った significant を major や considerable に替えると、表現が単調になりません。ただし、根拠のない数字を加えて大きさを強調するのは避けるべきです。大きさは significant という語そのものに語らせれば十分です。

3. 似た表現との違い：major・considerable・crucial

majorは「いくつかある中で主要な」という比較の感覚が強く、a major cause of the problem（問題の主な原因）のように使います。significant は比較よりも「無視できないほど大きい」という点に焦点があります。

considerable は量や手間の大きさに使われ、a considerable amount of time（かなりの時間）のような組み合わせが典型です。significant はもともと「意味のある」という意味をもつため、ただ量が多いだけでなく、それが何かに影響を与えるという含みがあります。

crucialとの違いも押さえておきましょう。crucial は重要度を言う語で、数量の変化とは結びつきにくいです。a significant role と a crucial role はどちらも使えますが、crucial のほうが「欠かせない」という意味合いが強くなります。影響を表す動詞句としてはhave an impact onも合わせて使えます。

4. 日本人が間違えやすい点

(1) 副詞が必要な位置で形容詞を使う

The number of visitors has increased significant. → The number of visitors has increased significantly.

動詞 increased を修飾するのは副詞なので、significantly にします。名詞を使う形なら a significant increase となり、形容詞と副詞の選び方が文の形で変わります。

(2) 数えられる名詞に amount を使う

A significant amount of students use smartphones in class. → A significant number of students use smartphones in class.

students は数えられる名詞なので number を使います。amount は water や money のような数えられない名詞に使います。significant 自体の誤りではありませんが、セットで使うことが多いため間違えやすい点です。

(3) 物の大きさに使う

They live in a significant house near the station. → They live in a large house near the station.

significant は物理的な大きさではなく、影響や変化、差の大きさを表す語です。big の言い換えとして覚えていると、このような誤りが起こりやすくなります。
