1. 要約での Before / After：「〜について言うと」を観点の整理に変える
原文では、about や when we talk about のように「話題を示す」書き方がよく出てきます。要約でそのまま写すと、ただ話題を並べただけの文になりがちです。in terms of を使うと、「どの観点で比べているのか」を文頭や文末で明示でき、短い要約でも論点がくっきりします。
例1：原文（3文）
Electric cars are expensive to buy. When we talk about running costs, however, they are much cheaper than gasoline cars. They also produce less pollution in cities.
要約
Although electric cars cost more to buy, they are superior to gasoline cars in terms of both running costs and urban air quality.
原文の3文が1文になり、語数はほぼ半分です。when we talk about running costs と they also produce less pollution という別々の文が、in terms of both A and B の形で「2つの観点」として1か所にまとまっています。この「観点でまとめる」動きが、要約の構成と語彙の両方で評価されやすい部分です。
例2：原文（2文）
The new library is very popular. About the number of visitors, it is the busiest public building in the city, but about money, it loses a lot every year.
要約
The new library is a success in terms of visitor numbers but a burden in terms of finances.
about を2回使った原文を、in terms of を対にした1文に言い換えています。the number of visitors を visitor numbers、money を finances と名詞をより硬い語に変えている点も、言い換えとして効いています。
2. 英作文（意見論述）での使い方：理由ごとに観点を示す
意見論述では理由を2つ挙げるのが基本です。in terms of を理由の段落の書き出しに置くと、その段落が「どの観点の話か」が最初の数語で伝わり、構成がはっきりします。
理由1の型：In terms of ＋ 観点, 主語 ＋ 動詞
In terms of cost, online classes allow students in rural areas to study without paying for transportation or accommodation.
理由2の型：観点を変えて並べる
In terms of flexibility, they also make it possible for working adults to learn at their own pace.
理由1と理由2で同じ型を使うと、読み手は「観点が切り替わった」とすぐにわかります。ただし3回以上くり返すと機械的に見えるので、2回目以降は with regard to や Another advantage is that ... に変える手もあります。
結論の型：複数の観点をまとめる
For these reasons, I believe online education is beneficial in terms of both cost and flexibility.
結論では、理由で挙げた観点名をそのまま in terms of both A and B に入れると、本文との対応がはっきりした締めくくりになります。
3. with regard to / when it comes to / regarding との違い
どれも「〜に関して」と訳されますが、in terms of の中心は「物差し・観点」です。ほかの表現は「話題」を示す働きが中心で、比較の文での収まり方が違います。

たとえば The two cities are similar in terms of population. は自然ですが、The two cities are similar with regard to population. はやや不自然に響きます。「似ている・異なる・優れている」のような比較の述語の後ろには in terms of が最も素直に収まります。逆に、新しい話題を段落の頭で導入するだけなら with regard to や as for でも足ります。なお when it comes to は会話的な響きがあるので、準1級の英作文では in terms of を優先するほうが文体がそろいます。
4. 日本人が間違えやすい点
(1) 観点ではなく「話題全体」に使ってしまう
In terms of smartphones, I will write my opinion. → As for smartphones, I will give my opinion.
in terms of の後ろには、費用・時間・安全性のように「物差し」になる名詞を置きます。ものそのものを話題として持ち出すときは as for や regarding のほうが自然です。
(2) 観点の名詞が抽象化されていない
In terms of it is cheap, buses are better. → In terms of price, buses are better.
前置詞句なので後ろに主語と動詞を置けません。「安い」という形容詞の内容は price や affordability という名詞に変えて入れます。
(3) 1文の中で観点が二重になる
In terms of cost, trains are cheaper in price. → In terms of cost, trains are the cheaper option.
in terms of cost と in price は同じ観点の重複です。観点を in terms of で示したら、述語の側では同じ観点をくり返さないようにします。
5. 練習問題
問1（穴埋め）
適切な名詞を入れてください。Tablets are lighter than laptops, so they are more convenient in terms of ___.（持ち運びやすさ）
答えと解説
正解は portability です。「持ち運びやすい」は形容詞 portable ですが、in terms of の後ろには名詞が必要なので portability にします。形容詞から名詞を作る力は、in terms of を使いこなすうえで欠かせません。
問2（言い換え）
in terms of を使って1文にまとめてください。Solar panels are good for the environment. But when we think about money, they take many years to pay off.
答えと解説
解答例は Solar panels are beneficial in terms of the environment, but they are less attractive in terms of cost because they take years to pay off. です。good を beneficial に変え、2つの観点を in terms of で対にしています。長期的な見通しを強調したいなら in the long run を加えることもできます。
原文が複数の観点を並べている要約では、in terms of でそれを1文に整理してみてください。考慮すべき要素を述べる take into account と組み合わせるのも効果的です。
