1. 要約での Before / After：many と a lot of を numerous にまとめる

英検2級の要約問題の原文には、many や a lot of が何度も出てきます。数が多いことは要約でも伝えるべき情報ですが、原文と同じ語をそのまま使うと、語彙を言い換えたことが伝わりません。numerous は「数が多い」を1語で、しかも書き言葉らしく表せる形容詞です。

例1：原文の一節

A lot of people in the city now use bike-sharing services. There are many bike stations near train stations and parks. People can easily borrow a bike and return it at another station.

要約文

Bike-sharing has become popular in the city because numerous stations make it convenient.

原文の a lot of people と many bike stations のうち、要約で残すべきなのは「駅がたくさんあって便利」という理由のほうです。numerous stations と書くことで、数の多さと利便性を結びつけて1文にできました。原文の約35語が13語になり、a lot of と many の両方を避けたので、語彙の言い換えもはっきり示せます。要約問題は内容・構成・語彙・文法の観点で採点され、このような言い換えは語彙の観点で評価されやすい部分です。

例2：原文の一節

Plastic waste is a serious problem in the ocean. Many sea animals eat plastic by mistake. Many birds and fish also get caught in plastic bags and nets.

要約文

Ocean plastic harms numerous sea creatures that swallow it or become trapped in it.

原文では many が2回使われ、「食べてしまう動物」と「絡まる動物」が別々の文になっています。sea animals, birds and fish をまとめて sea creatures とし、numerous を1回だけ使うことで、2つの被害を1文に収めました。このように、具体例をまとめる上位語と numerous を組み合わせると、要約らしい圧縮ができます。

2. 英作文での使い方：理由の説得力を高める

意見論述では、numerous は「例や利点がたくさんある」と述べて主張を補強するときに使います。ただし、数字を挙げずに数の多さを強調するので、後ろに必ず具体例を続けることが大切です。

• 序論：There are numerous reasons why I agree with this idea.
  There are numerous reasons why I think that schools should teach cooking.
• 理由：A offers numerous 名詞（複数形）. For example, 〜.
  The internet offers numerous opportunities to learn. For example, students can watch free lectures from universities.
• 結論：Although A has numerous advantages, 〜. / For these reasons, A brings numerous benefits to B.
  For these reasons, I believe that working from home brings numerous benefits to both workers and companies.

序論で There are numerous reasons と書いた場合でも、英検の英作文で求められる理由は2つです。「たくさんある」と言っておきながら2つしか挙げないことを不自然に感じるなら、序論は I have two reasons と書き、理由の段落の中で numerous を使うほうがすっきりします。具体例を出す際にはfor exampleやsuch asと組み合わせると流れが自然になります。

3. 似た表現との違い：many / several / a large number of

要約で語数を抑えたいときは numerous、文のリズムを変えたいときはa large number ofを使う、と使い分けるとよいでしょう。severalは数の程度が違うので、原文が「いくつか」と言っているのに numerous にすると、内容を誇張したことになります。原文の数の感覚を変えないことも、要約の内容点を守るうえで大切です。

4. 日本人が間違えやすい点

(1) numerous の後ろの名詞を単数形にする
numerous は数の多さを表すので、後ろの名詞は必ず複数形です。日本語には複数形がないため、s を落としやすい部分です。
There are numerous problem in this plan. → There are numerous problems in this plan.

(2) numerous of を使う
many of the students のような形につられて of を入れてしまう誤りです。numerous は形容詞として名詞の前に直接置きます。
Numerous of the visitors came from abroad. → Many of the visitors came from abroad.（または Numerous visitors came from abroad.）

(3) number と重ねてしまう
numerous には「数が多い」という意味がすでに含まれているので、number と一緒に使うと意味が重複します。a large number of と混ざった誤りです。
A numerous number of people joined the event. → Numerous people joined the event.（または A large number of people joined the event.）

5. 練習問題

問1（言い換え）次の文の a lot of を numerous に置き換えて書き直してください。
A lot of tourists visit the temple every year.

問2（穴埋め）空所に numerous と much のどちらが入るか答えてください。
(a) The company spent ( ) money on advertising.
(b) The company received ( ) complaints about its new product.

原文の many や a lot of を見つけたら、numerous に置き換えられるか試してみてください。名詞の数と s を確認する習慣も一緒に身につきます。
