1. 要約での Before / After：because と so の2文を as a result of で1文にする
英検2級の要約問題の原文では、原因と結果が because や so を使って別々の文、あるいは長い1文で書かれていることがよくあります。要約でそれをそのまま書くと、文が長くなり、原文の言い方も残ってしまいます。as a result of を使うと、原因を名詞句に縮めて結果の文の頭に置けるため、因果関係をはっきり保ったまま語数を減らせます。
例1：原文の一節
Many young people have moved from the village to big cities to find jobs. Because of this, there are not enough people to take care of the rice fields. Some fields have already been left unused.
要約文
As a result of young people moving to cities, some rice fields in the village have been abandoned.
原文の第1文（原因）を young people moving to cities という動名詞の句に縮め、第2文・第3文（結果）を1つの主節にまとめています。原文の約40語が18語になりました。Because of this という原文の言い方を避け、さらに left unused を abandoned と言い換えているので、語彙の面でも工夫が見えます。要約問題は内容・構成・語彙・文法の観点で採点されますが、原因と結果のつながりを1文で正確に示すことは、内容と構成の両方の評価につながります。
例2：原文の一節
The town started a program to clean its beaches every month. Volunteers collected a lot of trash, so the beaches became clean again. More tourists began to visit the town.
要約文
As a result of a monthly beach-cleaning program, the town’s beaches became clean and attracted more tourists.
原文は「取り組み → きれいになった → 観光客が増えた」という3段階です。最初の段階を a monthly beach-cleaning program という名詞句にし、残りの2つの結果を and でつないでいます。原因側を名詞句にまとめる力は要約で何度も使うので、動詞を名詞にする練習も合わせて行うと効果的です。
2. 英作文での使い方：理由の段落で効果を示す
意見論述の理由の段落では、「ある行動や制度の結果、どんな良いこと（悪いこと）が起きるか」を書くことが多くあります。as a result of はその流れを一文で示すのに向いています。
- 理由（原因を文頭に）：As a result of 名詞, 結果の文.
As a result of using online banking, people no longer have to wait in line at the bank. - 理由（原因を文末に）：結果の文 as a result of 名詞.
Some students lose sleep as a result of spending too much time on their smartphones. - 結論：As a result of these benefits, I believe that 〜.
As a result of these benefits, I believe that more cities should introduce free bicycle rental.
文頭に置くと「原因」が先に読み手に伝わり、文末に置くと「結果」が強調されます。理由1と理由2で位置を変えると、文の形が単調になりません。序論では主張を述べるだけなので、as a result of はあまり使わず、理由と結論で使うのが自然です。理由の段落の中で結果を述べる文を次につなげるには、副詞句のas a resultも便利です。

because of とdue toは「なぜか」を説明する表現で、as a result of は「何が起きたか」の流れを示す表現です。そのため、「雨のため中止された」のような一回きりの出来事なら due to が自然で、「法律ができた結果、行動が変わった」のような変化を表すときは as a result of がよく合います。thanks to は良い結果にしか使えないので、問題点を述べる文では避けてください。
4. 日本人が間違えやすい点
(1) 後ろに主語と動詞のある文を置く
as a result of は前置詞のはたらきをするので、後ろには名詞か動名詞しか置けません。
As a result of the price went up, fewer people bought it. → As a result of the price increase, fewer people bought it.
(2) 原因と結果を逆にする
of の後ろに来るのは「原因」です。日本語の「〜の結果」につられて、結果を of の後ろに置いてしまう誤りがあります。
As a result of more traffic accidents, people drive faster. → As a result of people driving faster, there are more traffic accidents.
(3) 動名詞の意味上の主語を忘れる
as a result of の後ろに動名詞を置くとき、その動作をするのが文の主語と違う場合は、意味上の主語を前に置きます。
As a result of raising taxes, many people are unhappy. → As a result of the government raising taxes, many people are unhappy.
誤りの文では、税金を上げたのが many people であるかのように読めてしまいます。
5. 練習問題
問1（言い換え）次の2文を、as a result of を使って1文にしてください。

答えと解説
答え：As a result of a new reading program, students’ test scores rose.（または Students’ test scores rose as a result of the school’s new reading program.）
原因の文を名詞句 a new reading program にまとめ、as a result of の後ろに置きます。introduced という動詞はそのまま残さず、名詞句の中に意味を含めます。
問2（穴埋め）空所に as a result と as a result of のどちらが入るか答えてください。

答え：(a) As a result of (b) As a result
(a) は後ろに the heavy snow という名詞が続くので of が必要です。(b) は前の文全体を受けて「その結果」と言うので of は付けません。後ろに名詞があるか文があるかで判断します。
